It gives us great pleasure to announce that Susan Beachy has been promoted to the newly created role of deputy editor for news research.
As the News Research department's assistant research manager for the past two years, Susan has been an important partner in leading her department while working tirelessly to field research requests from reporters, photographers and editors (she personally responded to nearly 2,000 in 2025 alone).
Debra Kamin, an investigative reporter on the Metro desk, said recently that Susan's "secret sauce" as a researcher is her ability to think like a reporter. " When I come to her seeking help with research, she doesn't just find me the phone number or court document that I need," Debra said. "She also thinks about how to elevate the reporting, expand it, and digs up other things as well that I hadn't even considered that push me to a whole new level."
In her new role, Susan will oversee the work of five researchers and a librarian on what she describes as a "small but mighty" team as they continue to expand their arsenal of research tools and help shape our report. In the coming months, she'll also be working on rolling out more self-service resources to the wider newsroom.
Since joining The Times in 2012 as a news researcher, Susan has worked with nearly every desk in the newsroom, from Metro to International and everywhere in between. She has provided critical research for countless daily stories, coverage of mass casualty events and long-term investigative pieces. In recent years, she has led training sessions for reporters and editors on research methods in breaking news situations.
Before she joined The Times, Susan worked in entertainment journalism, cable news, academia and the nonprofit sector.
Her cool head and collegial manner - not to mention those reporter's instincts - have prepared her well for this moment. Please join us in congratulating her.
