This week 42 Student Officers officially began their law enforcement career as part of the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy. From the first day, recruits were introduced to the team-oriented environment designed to prepare them for the future challenges of a career in law-enforcement. The class heard from law enforcement leaders including Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow and Northeastern University Police Chief Ruben Galindo. Over the next six months recruits will complete a variety of academic courses, hands-on physical training programs, and scenario-based training. Upon successful graduation, 19 are slated to join the Cambridge Police Department while others will work for departments including Acton, Newton, Medford, Needham, Merrimack College, Massport, Everett, and Middleton.
Now in it's eighth class, the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy is a collaboration between both departments with support from other agencies. The academy is authorized by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) to provide recruit level training for officers looking to work in municipal or university settings.
