Are the Cameras in Spokane Flock or ALPRs?

You may see cameras around town and wonder if they are Flock cameras or ALPRs (Automated License Plate Readers). The Spokane Police Department does not own or operate any Flock or ALPR cameras.

The City of Spokane currently has 19 Photo-Red cameras, which capture vehicles running red lights, and 11 Photo-Speed cameras, which capture vehicles speeding through school zones. The cameras are in various locations throughout the city.

There is no ALPR component to these cameras. When a violation occurs, it goes through a validation process before it becomes available for law enforcement review. The initial validation process consists of a review of a short video showing the speed or red-light violation, as well as a still image of the back of the vehicle. No photographs of vehicle's occupants are taken, and SPD is strictly prohibited by Washington state law from using these videos and images for any other purpose.

For more information regarding the Photo-Red and Photo-Speed Traffic Safety Program, as well as locations of the cameras visit our website.
