Allegheny College Student’s Path Transformed After Freshman Seminar Experience

For Anna Kohler '26, her freshman seminar with Shanna Kirschner, Robert G. Seddig Professor of Political Science, had a significant impact on her life.

The seminar examined terrorism, which is more than just random acts of violence, involving complexities in recruitment and operation. Kohler reflects that after taking the course, it instilled in her the confidence to be bolder and develop a deeper curiosity in international relations.

"My FS 102 class helped me become confident in my voice in the classroom and in everyday life," notes Kohler. "I honestly learned something new every time I went to class. We had such incredible conversations in the class, and I found myself genuinely excited to go to class and see my professor and classmates every day."

As a political sciencemajor, it also inspired her to declare minors in Arabicand Middle East and North African Studies.

My major/minor combination has allowed me to make so many incredible connections with the faculty at Allegheny College. The professors I met because of pursuing this major and minor combination are genuinely invested in my success both in and out of the classroom," says Kohler. "I think this really speaks to the student/faculty culture we have at Allegheny. There is such a personal connection and investment in students from faculty.

Kirschner continues to guide Kohler as her advisor and oversee Kohler's research, focusing on the use of religious rhetoric in Islamist political parties. Kohler has also explored the role of political mediation during the civil wars in El Salvador and Guatemala.

"I credit so much of my success to her advice and mentorship," says Kohler. "She has a way of making such complex topics feel more manageable without minimizing the important details."

After graduation, Kohler plans to pursue a master's degree in public policy with a focus on international relations.
