Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) hosted a virtual roundtable with House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-PA) and North Dakota agriculture leaders. The discussion touched on trade uncertainties, burdensome regulations, and the importance of a 5-year Farm Bill.
Participants included leaders and members from the North Dakota Farm Bureau, North Dakota Farmers Union, North Dakota Soybean Growers, North Dakota Grain Growers, North Dakota Corn Growers, North Dakota Stockman's Association, North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Council, and the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers.
"North Dakota's farmers and ranchers are the backbone of our economy and our communities. I want to make sure House Ag leaders hear directly from our producers about the challenges they face-rising input costs, decreasing prices, and market uncertainty. These conversations with our state's Ag leaders are essential as we work to protect and strengthen North Dakota agriculture," Fedorchak said.
During the hour-long conversation, Chair Thompson shared his commitment for passing a strong Farm Bill as quickly as possible. He emphasized the need to strengthen crop insurance, increase reference prices, and significantly increase money for the market access programs (MAP) and foreign market development program (FMD). He also pledged to increase funding for research and extending provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Actthat are vital to agriculture.
"Thank you, Chairman Thompson, for your strong commitment to rural America and for taking time to hear directly from North Dakota's farmers and ranchers. We look forward to having you out to North Dakota for a 'boots and blue jeans' conversation soon," Fedorchak concluded.
