Single lane closure on Kaumualiʻi Highway near the Tree Tunnel to begin on Sunday, Nov. 1

Posted on Oct 30, 2026 in Highways News, Main, News

LĪHUʻE - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies highway users of single lane closures on Kaumualiʻi Highway on Sunday, Nov. 1, Sunday, Nov. 8, and Sunday Nov. 15, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. for paving work.

The paving work will convert the area formerly occupied by the grass median, into an extended turn pocket for vehicles turning onto Maluhia Road. The makai lane will be closed on Sunday, Nov.1 with the mauka lanes closed on Sunday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 15. Alternating traffic will be routed through the open lane, and flaggers will help direct traffic coming out of Maluhia Road to Kaumualiʻi Highway.

The project includes widening the shoulder on the makai side of the highway. To work safely, the existing traffic lanes will be shifted to the mauka side on Sunday Nov. 15. The shift requires the removal and repaving of the existing centerline rumble strips.

Variable message boards will be posted along Kaumualiʻi Highway to alert road users. To view scheduled Kauaʻi lane closures for the week visit https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/kauai/
