EP 150: Housing Is Health: Lived Experience, Social Work, and Housing Justice

Housing instability is a social determinant of health and a critical issue for social workers across behavioral health, child welfare, aging, and community practice.

In this episode of Social Work Talks, Rosita Marinez, MSW, and Shams DaBaron, known as "Da Homeless Hero," bring professional expertise and lived experience into a conversation about homelessness, housing insecurity, and housing justice.

Marinez draws on her work in housing and behavioral health and her experience developing programs that address gaps in services for underserved communities across New York. DaBaron offers a community advocate's perspective informed by firsthand experience of homelessness and housing insecurity.

The conversation reflects NASW-NY's commitment to collaboration across housing and behavioral health.

Listeners will explore how to:

  • Center lived experience alongside professional social work expertise.
  • Strengthen collaboration among social workers and community advocates in housing policy and service delivery.
  • Connect the "Housing Is Health" framework with direct-service, macro, and administrative practice.

Listen to the episode to explore the connection between housing, health, and social work and what it means for your practice.
