WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) applauded the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for extending the tax filing deadlines for Louisianans effected by Winter Storm Fern. This announcement comes after Cassidy urged the IRS to do so. These taxpayers now have until March 31, 2026, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.
"Families and small businesses are still recovering. Now they have breathing room to do so before worrying about taxes," said Dr. Cassidy.
Background
Widespread power outages and business disruptions-particularly in Louisiana-occurred just ahead of critical IRS reporting deadlines, making timely compliance difficult or impossible for many taxpayers. Cassidy pushed to extend the deadline for affected families and businesses.
Cassidy, alongside all members of Louisiana's congressional delegation, also expressed support for Governor Jeff Landry's request for an expedited federal Major Disaster declaration following Winter Storm Fern, which impacted Louisiana from January 23-27, 2026, causing widespread power outages, road closures, and water system disruptions across northern Louisiana.
Cassidy released a statement following President Trump's approval of this request.
