Marquette Senior High School's senior class spent the day on Northern Michigan University's campus Oct. 28, learning what life as a Wildcat could look like for them.
"We're excited to show Marquette Senior High School students everything NMU has to offer in the way of student life, academics and all the incredible opportunities available to them should they choose to attend NMU," said Jess Jones, executive director for Northern Student Experiences. "NMU has transformed so much in recent years especially, and we are thrilled to invite students to explore what success could look like for them here and beyond college."
"Our goal is to show these high schoolers that world-class academics, modern facilities and an engaging campus community are waiting for them right in their own backyard."
The day began at MSHS with remarks from Associate Vice President for Northern Student Experience Jeff Korpi and President Chris Olsen to the senior class gathered in the MSHS gymnasium.
"I want you to do one thing when you walk around campus - envision what your freshman year will be like," Olsen said. "A lot of things we offer first-year and second-year students, you're going to have to wait to be a grad student if you go to a larger institution. So, think about what kind of experience you would get and try to visualize yourself there."
Following the short assembly, students were bused to campus for a packed schedule that included tours of NMU's Art & Design laboratories, media production studios, renovated Lydia M. Olson Library and Harden Hall and the Woods residence halls.
The day also included lunch at Northern Lights Dining and presentations from NMU's Financial Aid office and student success advisors before ending with a panel discussion and Q&A between NMU and MSHS students.
"We want our students to see what is possible after high school," said MSHS Assistant Principal Amanda Erspamer. "We are fortunate to have NMU as a close neighbor and willing partner to provide these experiences. This helps our Sentinel seniors learn about new opportunities and start picturing what their future could look like after graduation."
