Rep. Nancy Mace Supports $130,909 Federal Grant to Protect Hanahan Firefighters

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Sept. 29, 2026) - Today, Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) announced the Hanahan Fire Department has been awarded a $130,909 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to install vehicle exhaust removal systems at all three of the department's fire stations.

The funding will help protect firefighters from prolonged exposure to harmful diesel exhaust, creating a safer work environment for the first responders who risk their lives every day to protect Lowcountry families. The project will install vehicle exhaust removal systems throughout Hanahan's fire stations, improving firefighter health and safety while strengthening emergency readiness.

"Hanahan firefighters answer the call every day to keep Lowcountry families safe. They shouldn't have to worry about breathing toxic exhaust while preparing for their next emergency," said Congresswoman Mace. "This funding invests in the health and safety of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us. They protect our communities. We'll always make sure they have the resources they need to protect themselves."

Hanahan Fire Chief Christopher Zak offered the following statement after the department received the grant:

"Firefighters spend a significant portion of their careers inside our fire stations. They are where our firefighters work, train, eat, sleep, and prepare to respond to emergencies. Installing these systems represents an important investment in reducing that risk and protecting the people who protect our community. I also want to express our sincere appreciation to Congresswoman Nancy Mace for the support she provided for this project. Her advocacy and recognition of the importance of protecting our firefighters were greatly appreciated," said Chief Zak.

Congresswoman Mace submitted a letter of support to FEMA in support of the Hanahan Fire Department's application, emphasizing the department's critical role in protecting one of South Carolina's fastest-growing communities and the importance of investing in firefighter health and safety.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program provides competitive federal funding to help fire departments obtain equipment and infrastructure which improve firefighter safety, operational effectiveness, and emergency response capabilities.
