All four US House races in Iowa resulted in the re-election of Republicans (District 1 has not officially been called yet, but Republican Miller-Meeks is expected to ultimately triumph), along with former President Donald Trump winning all six of Iowa's Electoral College votes.
Republicans picked up one seat in the Iowa Senate, increasing their majority to 35 versus the Democrat's 15. Republican Senator Brad Zaun of Ankeny lost to Democratic challenger Matt Blake. Also In the Des Moines area, Republican challenger Mike Pike defeated Senator Nate Boulton. In the Cedar Rapids metro area, Republican challenger Dave Sires bested Democrat Senator Eric Giddens in a district that covers parts of Benton County, and Democrat Representative Art Staed was elected to the Senate seat previously held by Democrat Senator Todd Taylor.
In the Iowa House, Republicans increased their margin to 67 over Democrat's 33. Republican challengers won four seats previously held by Democrats in Marshalltown, Dubuque, Ankeny, and Mason City. In the Cedar Rapids area, Democrat Aime Wichtendahl won the open seat vacated by Democrat Representative Art Staed, who won an open Senate seat.
Republicans and Democrats are expected to meet in person to choose their chamber leaders and begin assigning committee seats. The new legislative session begins January 13, 2025.
The Economic Alliance congratulates those who won their elections in the metro area, and thanks all candidates who ran. We look forward to collaborating on pro-growth, pro-business policies.
