SGMC Health Honors Harvey with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing

SGMC Health recognized Brittni Harvey, RN, as the December recipient of the DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing, honoring her leadership, compassion, and dedication to patient care. Harvey has been part of the health system for 7.5 years and currently works in the staffing pool, serving medical/surgical areas at SGMC Health Main.

Harvey was nominated by a Valdosta State University nursing student who worked alongside her for fifteen 12-hour shifts during her training. Serving as a preceptor, Harvey's actions made a lasting impression on the student. The nomination highlighted Harvey's ability to lead by example and foster teamwork, saying, "She showed me what it truly means to be a team leader, a team player, and a compassionate nurse. She demonstrated that leadership is not about giving orders from a distance, but about working side by side with other nurses and doctors by offering guidance and understanding."

One moment that stood out occurred when a patient passed during their shift. Harvey approached the situation with grace and dignity, teaching the student that nursing care extends beyond life:

"She taught me how to perform post-mortem care gently, preserving the patient's dignity and honoring their life," shared the nomination. "From this experience, I learned that nursing is not only about providing care when life is present, but also about offering compassion, respect, and humanity in the final moments and beyond."

The DAISY Award is presented monthly in front of the nurse's colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate of recognition, a hand-carved sculpture titled A Healer's Touch from the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe, and a floral arrangement of daisies, generously donated by The Flower Gallery, SGMC Health's local DAISY Award sponsor.

SGMC Health offers a variety of recognition programs to honor employees who embody its tagline of Remarkable People, Extraordinary Care, Human Kindness. To learn more about these awards and other recognition programs, visit https://sgmc.org/recognition.
