Construction on the Route K and Old Plank Road roundabout is nearing completion, with all remaining work expected to wrap up in February. Major roadway work for the third phase of construction concluded Dec. 31, reopening east-to-west traffic on Route K and restoring a vital travel connection for the community.
The fourth and final phase of the project is underway on the north side of the roundabout. Once this phase is complete, the City will restore full access between West Route K and West Old Plank Road.
The new roundabout replaces a previously more dangerous intersection that presented safety and visibility challenges for drivers. In addition to improving traffic flow, the project adds sidewalks and improves pedestrian crossings. When complete, the roundabout will better accommodate all users traveling through this busy area.
Engineers design roundabouts to slow vehicles at locations where conflicts are most likely to occur, while still keeping traffic moving efficiently. Unlike traditional signal or stop-controlled intersections, roundabouts reduce congestion and delays by eliminating unnecessary stops. When crashes do occur, they are typically lower-speed, less severe collisions rather than more severe head-on or T-bone crashes.
Although the project took longer than initially anticipated, delays were mainly due to soil conditions encountered during construction. Crews spent additional time removing large amounts of underground material, such as tree roots, and replacing it with more stable material. That extra work will help ensure a more durable, long-lasting roadway.
The City of Columbia Public Works Department thanks nearby residents, businesses and drivers for their patience and cooperation as this essential safety project progresses.
