The SLO County Elections Office shares information about safety, security, and transparency during the upcoming November 3, 2026, General Election
As the November 3, 2026, General Election approaches, the SLO County Elections Office wants voters to know that protecting their ability to cast a ballot safely, privately, and without interference is an important part of administering every election.
We understand that some voters may have questions or concerns about what to expect at polling places on Election Day. Our goal is simple: Every eligible voter should be able to participate confidently and have their ballot handled according to established election procedures and current California law.
Voters Are Protected at the Polls
California law includes protections intended to keep voting locations accessible and free from interference.
Among other protections, the law prohibits intimidating or preventing a voter from voting, obstructing access to a polling place, interfering with the voting process, and certain electioneering activities within 100 feet of the entrance to a polling place or a person waiting in line to vote.
Election observers are permitted to observe polling place operations, an important part of election transparency, but they may not disrupt election operations or interfere with a voter's right to cast a secret ballot.
The SLO County Elections Office provides guidance to election workers and observers so that voting can proceed in an orderly manner while protecting voter privacy, ballot security, and public access to the election process.
Your Ballot Is Protected, Too
Election security extends beyond the polling place.
The Elections Office uses established procedures for handling, processing, and counting ballots. Elections Center processes are also open to public observation under published rules designed to maintain both transparency and ballot security.
The office shares election observer guidelines on its website about a month prior to Election Day. No appointment is necessary to observe, but the office recommends calling ahead to confirm that specific processes will be conducted that day.
Voting equipment is subject to Logic & Accuracy Testing before an election, and after the election the County conducts a legally required manual tally of a subset of ballots to confirm the accuracy of the machine tabulators. Dates and times for these observable activities will be posted on the election webpage SloVote.gov/November2026, and the community is encouraged to attend.
Choose the Voting Option That's Right for You
By law, SLO County voters have several ways to participate in the November 3 General Election.
Every active registered voter will be mailed a Vote-by-Mail ballot by October 5. Voters may return their ballot by mail, use an official ballot drop box, vote early in person at the SLO Elections Office (or at the Atascadero Office beginning October 26), or vote at their assigned polling place on Election Day. New this election: Voters can choose to bring their Vote-by-Mail ballot to their assigned polling location on Election Day, check in, and deposit that mail ballot directly into the precinct ballot box without a return envelope.
Polling places throughout SLO County will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3. Voters who are in line before 8:00 p.m. remain eligible to vote.
Voters can look up their assigned polling place beginning October 5 at SloVote.gov/November2026. Polling place information will also be printed at the top of their Vote-by-Mail ballot.
