Land Use Permit Application for Bison Enclosure in Yukon Flats Area - LAS 36026

Subject to AS 38.05.850, the Northern Regional Land Office has received an application for the following:

APPLICANT: Alaska Department of Fish & Game

PROJECT NAME: LAS 36026

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: The proposed project site is located on the west bank of Mardow Lake, adjacent to the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, approximately 24 miles southwest of Chalkyitsik.

LEGAL DESCRIPTION:
Fairbanks Meridian, Township 17 North, Range 18 East, Sections 8

REQUESTED ACTIVITY: Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) has applied for a land use permit on DNR managed state land to establish a temporary storage and holding area for wood bison in support of the Wood Bison Restoration Project. The project site will consist of a 10-12-acre fenced enclosure, camping area, outhouse, ATV, and landing area. Selective tree and brush clearing will occur inside the fence enclosure and the landing area. The project area will be occupied for 1 or 2 weeks at a time with periodic visits in between. Sections of fence enclosure will be opened to allow for passage when not in use. Equipment will be stored on site during nonuse. Access to the site will be by aircraft only. The construction of the bison holding enclosure is expected to begin in the summer of 2026.

This notice only pertains to the proposed use of state land for the above-mentioned holding enclosure/storage area. The ADF&G has conducted its own public outreach and planning workshops for the Yukon Flats Wood Bison Restoration Project.

REQUESTED TERM: 5 Years

DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS: June 4, 2026

The public is invited to comment on this activity. The purpose of this notice is to gather input before a decision is made on this activity. To ensure consideration, written comments must be received by the Division of Mining, Land and Water at 3700 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99709 on or before 5:00 p.m. on the date noted above. After review and adjudication, we may issue an authorization with stipulations for the activity. The activity may be modified during the review and adjudication process.
