SWOSU Pharmacy Students Engage with State Leaders at State Capitol Event

SWOSU Pharmacy students and faculty visited the Oklahoma State Capitol during the Oklahoma Pharmacists Association Legislative Day on March 24. The group joined pharmacy professionals from across the state to meet with legislators and discuss issues affecting pharmacy practice and patient care in Oklahoma.

Doctor of Pharmacy students from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) participated in the Oklahoma Pharmacists Association (OPhA) Legislative Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol on March 24. The annual event connects pharmacy professionals and students with state leaders to discuss issues affecting pharmacy practice and health care in Oklahoma.

A total of 60 SWOSU Pharmacy students attended and took part in meetings with state leaders, including Attorney General Gentner Drummond, Senator Lonnie Paxton, Speaker Kyle Hilbert, and Senator Johnathan Wingard, along with other legislators. These meetings give students the opportunity to speak directly with policymakers about current topics in pharmacy practice and health care.

Students were accompanied by SWOSU College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Les Ramos, along with faculty members Dr. Sarah Yount and Dr. Nancy Williams.

Throughout the day, students learned about legislative issues impacting pharmacy practice and met in small groups with legislators to share their perspectives. Discussions included legislation related to the advancement of the pharmacy profession and the importance of patient choice when selecting pharmacy services for medications and health care needs.

The event also included a presentation from Marty Hendrick, executive director of the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy, who spoke about current initiatives and priorities within the state board.

Experiences like Legislative Day are part of the professional development process for SWOSU student pharmacists, who are trained to engage in patient care as well as the broader systems that shape health care. The College of Pharmacy emphasizes a hands-on learning environment and close interaction with faculty, giving students opportunities to apply what they learn in real-world settings, including policy and advocacy.
