Prospective students can experience a day in the life of a Lipscomb University music student during the School of Music's annual Music Immersion Day on Monday, Oct. 12.
Now in its fifth year, Music Immersion Day includes classes, workshops, private lessons, ensemble experiences and opportunities to connect with Lipscomb faculty and students.
"Music Immersion Day is for people who are thinking about majoring in music and want to try a full day in the program" said Wendy Matthews, director of the School of Music. "It gives students a great opportunity to experience what we offer and see if Lipscomb is a good fit."
Students may choose a traditional or commercial music track for the day based on their interests. The traditional track includes choir and instrumental experiences, music theory, studio classes and film and media music. The commercial track features songwriting, music industry studies, audio technology, commercial music, jazz, worship music and guitar. Participants also may receive a free 30-minute sample lesson with a Lipscomb music faculty member.
That range reflects Lipscomb's "One School of Music" vision, which brings musicians from different traditions together to learn, perform and collaborate."Music Immersion Day gives students a glimpse of a community where all music matters," said Mike Fernandez, dean of the George Shinn College of Entertainment & the Arts. "They receive rigorous training while learning across disciplines and gaining real-world experience from day one, all within a Christian liberal arts education where they are known, supported and encouraged."
Matthews said the event introduces students to areas of music they may not have engaged with in high school.
"A student may not have had the chance to take a music theory, production or music industry class," she said. "This is an opportunity to find out what those courses are like and what a Lipscomb music major really does."
New for this year, the day will begin with a School of Music Fair featuring information about degree offerings, admission, financial aid, scholarships, advising, housing and campus life.
"We want students and parents to connect directly with the people who can answer their questions," Matthews said. "Immersion Day is designed to be a one-stop opportunity to learn about college life, studying music and all that Lipscomb has to offer."
The expanded event also includes a parent track. Parents will attend the opening fair and information session before meeting with College of Entertainment & the Arts and School of Music leadership. Optional afternoon activities include a Nashville music tour led by
John J. Thompson, director of music industry studies, and a campus tour.
Eligible high school seniors and transfer students may audition for the School of Music during Immersion Day by registering for an audition in advance. The prescreening requirement will be waived for participants.
Whether students know which area of music they want to pursue or are just exploring their options, Matthews said Immersion Day provides a comprehensive introduction to studying music at Lipscomb.
"Students can experience classes, make music, take a private lesson and meet the people who would be part of their college experience," she said. "It's a full picture of what life as a Lipscomb music student can look like."
Music Immersion Day begins at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the Thomas James McMeen Music Center. Advance registration is required. Visit the Music Immersion Day webpage to register and view schedules and audition information.
