Washington, D.C. -
Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, released the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 21, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act, legislation co-sponsored by Rep. Webster to protect infants born-alive after an abortion.
"It's unconscionable that babies born alive after failed abortions can be denied medical care to save their lives," said Rep. Webster. "The unalienable right to life promised in our Declaration of Independence extends to unborn children. The right to life is our first God-given right, and today, House Republicans reaffirmed that truth with the passage of this bill. Every human life is sacred, and the passage of this legislation affirms the inherent dignity of every child, who is deserving of the same compassionate care and legal protection as every other child born in our nation."
Background on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act:
-
Requires healthcare practitioners to exercise the same degree of medical care for children who survive abortion procedures as they would for other infants born.
-
Imposes strong criminal penalties for practitioners who fail to provide care or fail to report non-compliance.
-
Requires healthcare providers to report violations, reducing the number of born-alive abortions that go unreported.
-
Gives the mother of the abortion survivor a civil cause of action against the abortionist and protection from prosecution, recognizing that women are the second victims of abortion and promoting the dignity of motherhood.
