GRAND BAHAMA, The Bahamas - Remembrance Day, observed on the second Sunday of November in alignment with commemorations across the Commonwealth, brought together community members and officials in solemn reflection as the nation paused to honour those who lost their lives in service and in the line of duty.
Parliamentarians, members of the Diplomatic Corps, uniformed officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and Royal Bahamas Defence Force, and students from schools across the island participated in the 63rd Annual Remembrance Day Observance at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. The procession and ceremony paid tribute to the brave men and women who served in defence of The Bahamas and global peace.
The fixed annual observance began with the traditional parade to the church, where schools, uniformed branches, and community organizations assembled. The Royal Bahamas Defence Force Rangers were entrusted with the ceremonial flag-bearing, symbolizing the next generation's commitment to service and duty.
During the Petitioning Prayers, intercessions were offered for national restoration, the island of Grand Bahama, veterans and their families, and the youth of the nation.
Delivering the homily, The Reverend Joshua E. V. Davis, Assistant Curate at the Pro-Cathedral of Christ the King, encouraged the congregation to cultivate spiritual discipline, keep their hearts tender, and allow faith to inspire gratitude. He reminded attendees that the purpose of the gathering was to give thanks for those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to live in the peace they fought to secure.
A central feature of the observance was the wreath-laying ceremony, during which more than 17 wreaths were placed by government leaders, military officials, and representatives of civic and humanitarian organizations. Among those laying wreaths were:
The Hon. Ginger Moxey, Minister for Grand Bahama - on behalf of the Government of The Bahamas
Senator James Turner - on behalf of the Senate
Assistant Commissioner of Police Alvardo Dames - for the Royal Bahamas Police Force
Commander Valentino Rolle - for the Royal Bahamas Defence Force
Kimberly Outten - for the Bahamas Red Cross Grand Bahama Centre
The red poppy, worn by many in attendance, stood as a poignant symbol of remembrance and respect for the courage, service, and sacrifice of Bahamian servicemen and women.
As the lights dimmed and the haunting notes of the Last Post and Reveille filled the sanctuary, the congregation observed a moment of silent reflection in honour of the fallen. The observance once again underscored the nation's enduring commitment to honour the past, safeguard peace, and uphold the freedoms for which so many gave their lives.
