New year, take two: It’s time for a resolution reboot

April 3, 2026 - If your New Year's diet resolutions didn't go exactly as planned, you're not alone. According to Forbes, the average resolution lasts just 3.74 months. A resolution reboot offers a fresh chance to revisit goals, make small adjustments and reset to achieve sustainable habits that will take you into next January.

Our customer wellness team answers some top trending diet questions to help you get back on track.

What has changed with the new dietary guidelines?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Anastasia K., RDN/LDN: "The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030) takes a firmer stance on cutting back processed foods, added sugars and artificial ingredients, while also encouraging people to eat more protein and feel comfortable choosing full-fat dairy. They still encourage fiber and whole grains, but they've relaxed restrictions on red meat, with the focus now being on limiting processed meats instead. Saturated fat limits are the same as before, with a new reminder to watch out for highly processed oils."

What are some products to best support the GLP-1 lifestyle?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Shannon M., RDN/LDN: "GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your body naturally releases after you eat. GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone. Therefore, the GLP-1 lifestyle focuses on habits that support the way GLP-1 medications work.

"Look to prioritize foods high in protein and fiber. This will help keep your blood sugar stabilized, your muscles preserved and your gut moving. Some great options include lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

"In a time crunch? You can also look for convenience products with fiber and protein claims on their packaging. Just be mindful of added sugar and sodium content, and remember to limit highly processed foods."

What are the best foods that contain fiber?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Liz C., MS, RDN/LDN: "Some good sources of fiber are whole grains (like popcorn, brown rice, bran flakes), legumes (like lima beans, green beans, lentils), seeds (like pumpkin, chia, sunflower), nuts (like almond, pine, pistachio) and berries (like raspberries, blackberries).
"For a fiber grand slam, prepare oatmeal with a sprinkle of chia seeds and berries. Use GreenWise Organic Old Fashioned Oats with GreenWise Organic Chia Seeds and fresh or frozen raspberries."

What are the best foods that contain protein?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Anastasia K., RDN/LDN: "The best protein foods include lean meats, seafood, eggs, dairy and protein powders, which generally provide 15 - 25 grams of protein per serving, depending on the protein source. Plant-based options like nuts, seeds, beans, tofu, tempeh and meat alternatives also contain protein, typically ranging from about 5 - 18 grams per serving. Mixing both animal and plant-based proteins throughout the day makes it easier to meet your goals and adds variety to meals. Try our Peach-Mango Protein Smoothies and Hearty Potato and Lentil Salad recipes as a way to incorporate more protein into your diet."

Are carbs bad for you?

Publix Nutrition Specialist Aria H., RDN/LDN: "The simple answer is, no. Carbs provide us with energy and important nutrients like fiber, vitamins and minerals. However, it is important to keep the quality of carbohydrates in mind. It is best to stick with foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans, and be mindful of consuming refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, pastries and sugary beverages. Some good sources for carbohydrates are GreenWise Avocado Seed & Grain Bread with Sesame and Guacamole Spices, GreenWise Quinoa and Kale and Publix Roasted Garlic Brussels Sweet Potato Sheet Pan/Air Fryer Veggie Kit."

What are some low-carb breakfast ideas?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Liz C., MS, RDN/LDN: "Bowls are still trending, as they are an easy and satisfying option. Try making a scrambled egg bowl with spinach, tomato, feta and mushrooms. For something more indulgent, try chia seed pudding made with almond milk for a lower carb twist. Keto-friendly breads make avocado toast an option, as well."

What is the best diet?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Nicole O., MS, RDN/LDN: "In short, there is no 'best' diet. The best diet for you may depend on your health and wellness goals. Remember to have a balanced diet to ensure you meet your nutritional needs. Explore different eating styles on Publix's Health & Wellness page."

Is the Mediterranean diet still a thing?

Publix Corporate Dietitian Nicole O., MS, RDN/LDN: "The Mediterranean diet is still indeed a hot topic and diet choice for those looking to increase their health and nutrition goals. The Mediterranean diet is a great way to incorporate all food groups, including herbs, spices, nuts and high-quality fats like olive oil.

"If you're looking to start your journey with the Mediterranean diet, Publix has many products to start your new habits, such as Publix Classic Olive Oil, Salmon, Publix Walnuts and Publix Shelled Raw Sunflower Seeds.

What are some tips for planning my meals for the week, keeping wellness in mind?

Publix Nutrition Specialist Aria H., RDN/LDN: "The key to meal prep success is finding a method that easily fits into your schedule and preferences. Choose foods and recipes that you will enjoy eating more than once a week. Prepping vegetables, proteins and fruits in bulk also makes it easier to mix and match meals.

For intermittent fasting, is it better to fast for 12 hours or 16 hours?

Publix Nutrition Specialist Aria H., RDN/LDN: "Both are part of the most popular fasting type called the 'time-restricted method' in which you have set windows for fasting and eating. For example, you could fast for 12 hours and eat within the next 12 hours, or you could fast for 16 hours and eat within the next 8 hours. Studies have shown that fasting may have beneficial effects on things like weight, body composition and cardiovascular health. However, the studies vary greatly depending on their definition of fasting, their protocol and the populations studied. It's unclear if one is better than another, and it all comes down to your personal preference, medical history and which method is best for your body."
