The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has held a meeting in Madrid with his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, with the aim of giving new impetus to political contact between the two countries. In this regard, both ministers have proposed to hold new political consultations to succeed those already held in both 2023 and 2025.
The two ministers, who met in the context of this year's Conference of Ambassadors with the Nigerian foreign minister as a guest, were also able to note the progress made on the Africa Strategy (2025-2028), which in one year has fulfilled 36% of the lines of action set out. Both of them also highlighted the launch of the Inter-ministerial Commission for Africa and the Spain-Africa Advisory Council, which includes a Nigerian woman among its members.
Albares pointed out that Nigeria is one of Spain's main suppliers of energy resources and a reliable partner, while expressing his confidence that this relationship must be boosted by the creation of new job opportunities through greater investment.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs welcomed Nigeria's entry into the Council of the International Maritime Organisation, a candidacy that Spain has supported. They also had the opportunity to discuss other issues of interest, such as the security situation in the African country, the adoption of the Luanda declaration, and the steps taken towards peace, prosperity and effective multilateralism.
