Hemmens Cultural Center Unveils $14.4 Million Expansion with May 18 Celebration

Following a three-year construction effort guided by years of planning and community input, the city of Elgin will celebrate the completion of a $14.4 million expansion to the Hemmens Cultural Center on Sunday, May 18.

Festivities begin at 2:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by an afternoon of performances, immersive experiences, and family-friendly programming aimed at highlighting the enhanced facility and Elgin's vibrant arts community.

"It's beyond exciting to have finally brought the vision and dedication of so many to fruition," said Amanda Harris, Director of Cultural Arts & Special Events. "Having a beautifully renovated space that serves the community and stands as a cultural icon in our region-right here in our own backyard-is such a privilege. We intend to make the most of it by showcasing some amazing talent while also elevating the audience experience."

The public is invited to explore the updated venue, meet local arts organizations, and enjoy complimentary refreshments. The event also includes a preview of the 2025-2026 performance season and exhibits that showcase how the Hemmens expansion will support a broader range of artistic programming and cultural engagement.

At 4 p.m., the internationally acclaimed urban circus group 360 ALLSTARS will take the stage for a dynamic, high-energy performance combining BMX stunts, breakdancing, acrobatics, basketball tricks, drumming and cutting-edge visuals. The group, currently on its 10th Anniversary World Tour, has performed at iconic venues such as the Sydney Opera House and on Broadway.
