WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after President Trump signed an executive order seeking to block or undo all state regulation of the artificial intelligence industry:
"No place in America knows the promise of artificial intelligence technologies better than California. It's why we are world leaders in A.I. innovation and industry and why we have been able to work collaboratively to adopt some of the strongest consumer protections in the country. But with today's executive order, the Trump Administration is attacking state leadership and basic safeguards in one fell swoop.
"To truly unleash innovation in artificial intelligence, the Trump Administration should instead be bolstering federal agencies, investing in research universities, and growing our talent pipeline - both American and foreign born.
"The Trump Administration may refuse to protect consumers or invest in innovation, but make no mistake: California will continue to lead the A.I. revolution."
