In an act of submission to the United States' policy of aggression, Colombia's President-elect announces that he will break ties with Cuba

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba rejects the statements made on 26 July by the President-elect of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella Otero, who announced that he would close his country's embassy in Havana and that his government would have no ties whatsoever with our country.

These statements run counter to the historic relations of friendship and brotherhood between Cuba and Colombia.

Should this decision - which lacks the slightest justification and does not serve Colombia's national interests - be implemented, it would lay bare the clear subordination of Colombia's next government to the policy of division and confrontation between our nations, long promoted by the United States, as well as its links to the most despicable and vulgar aspects of anti-Cuban politics in that country.

Nothing could be further removed from the ideal of Latin American and Caribbean unity championed by the founding fathers of both countries, to which the peoples of the region have devoted so much effort and sacrifice.

We enjoy a smooth bilateral relationship with Colombia, which has seen significant progress in the economic and trade spheres, as well as in cooperation and academic exchanges, to the benefit of both peoples. It has always been in Cuba's interest to expand and strengthen this relationship.

Cuba is aware that this hostile and unfounded action does not reflect the sentiments of the brotherly Colombian people, whom we have tirelessly supported for decades in their quest for peace through a negotiated political solution to their internal armed conflict.

Cuba will honour its commitments to the young people studying medicine in our country, as part of the Peace Agreements signed in Havana in 2016.

The brotherhood between our two peoples and nations will prevail over any attempt to undermine it.
