Staying safe online during heightened global cyber activity

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has cautioned that foreign cyber actors may increase online harassment and influence activities during the current period of instability in the Middle East. Although there is no indication of a coordinated attack against Defence Team members, the current cyber environment reinforces the need for vigilance online, both on the DWAN and across personal devices while using social media, messaging apps, and gaming platforms. Maintaining disciplined online behaviour helps protect you, your family, your colleagues, and the operations we conduct on behalf of Canadians.

Maintain digital hygiene

Check your privacy settings and be cautious about what you share about your work and personal life, especially location information. Exercise caution if receiving unsolicited contacts or messages. Report suspicious messages or contact attempts to the (CFNCIU).

Avoid online debates

Do not engage with posts about military operations, policy, or government decisions. Do not respond to hostile, provocative, or political commentary. Even well-intentioned comments can attract unwanted attention.

Follow the rules of what you can and can't say online

CAF members and DND employees must not publish or comment on military matters without authorization, including on personal social media accounts. All online activity is expected to reflect Defence Team values, maintain professionalism, and protect sensitive information. Defence Team members are encouraged to always adopt a security-focused/aware mindset in both online and offline environments.

Reporting concerning online activity

• Save records of harassment or suspicious contact.
• Report threats or criminal behaviour to the Military Police or local police.
