PASSED: Sens. Moran, Carper Resolution to Recognize September as National Student Parent Month

Tuesday, September 24, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Senate passed a resolution introduced by Sens. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) - ranking member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee - and Tom Carper (D-Del.) to recognize September 2024 as National Student Parent Month. The resolution highlights the contributions and achievements of the nearly 4 million Americans with children, including our military-connected student parents, who attend postsecondary educational institutions while also caring for their families.

"Balancing classes and parenting requires patience and perseverance," said Sen. Moran. "This is especially true for many of our military-connected students who wear many hats - mom, dad, student, servicemember or veteran - as they work to earn a degree or professional certification while on active duty, transitioning back to civilian life, or while a spouse is deployed."

"Student parents work hard every day to better their lives and pave a path to success for their children," said Sen. Carper. "Receiving an education while raising a family requires time, energy, and dedication. I'm proud to lead this resolution with Senator Moran to recognize nearly 4 million Americans who deserve this recognition."

Forty-seven percent of all student parents are military-connected students, and there are currently 813 surviving military spouses using educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in the U.S.
