Statement by President Meloni

The Italian Government expresses closeness to Cardinal Pizzaballa, Father Ielpo and the religious figures whom the Israeli authorities prevented from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass at the Holy Sepulchre today.

The Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is a sacred place in Christianity and, as such, it must be preserved and safeguarded for the celebration of holy rites.

Preventing the Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Custos of the Holy Land from entering, especially on a solemnity as central to the faith as Palm Sunday, is an affront not only to believers but to all communities that recognise religious freedom.
