Traffic Stop Leads to Firearms Arrest

On December 20, 2025, at approximately 12:30 a.m., patrol officers with the Frederick Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of Schley Avenue for multiple traffic violations, including exceeding the posted speed limit. During the stop, officers observed the vehicle's occupants exhibiting signs of nervous behavior.

A Frederick County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit was requested to conduct a free-air sniff of the vehicle. While the occupants were exiting the vehicle, officers observed a portion of a firearm in plain view. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of two loaded, non-serialized 9mm polymer handguns and a loaded extended magazine compatible with the firearms.

The following adult occupants were arrested and charged with possession of a regulated firearm under the age of 21, possession of a firearm without a required serial number, and transporting a loaded handgun in a vehicle:

• Joshua L. Mayhew Jr., DOB 01/12/2006
• Keith D. Miles, DOB 09/15/2006
• Josiah Dowery, DOB 12/02/2006

Additionally, Josiah Dowery was charged with possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.

Two juveniles were also charged during the investigation. Juvenile information will not be released.
