The holiday season has a way of sneaking up quickly. Between gifts, travel, family gatherings and festive celebrations, expenses can add up before you know it. Taking a little time in the fall to prepare your finances can help you enjoy the holidays without putting unnecessary pressure on your budget. We've outlined five key financial steps to take before the holidays arrive:
1. Set a Holiday Spending Budget: Start by determining how much you can comfortably afford to spend this holiday season. Consider gifts, meals, travel, decorations, entertainment and other seasonal expenses. Having an overall number in mind can make it easier to make thoughtful spending decisions and avoid surprises later.
2. Start Saving Now: Even setting aside a small amount each week between now and the holidays can make a difference. Consider creating a separate savings goal specifically for holiday expenses. Breaking the total amount you expect to spend into smaller, manageable contributions can make saving feel much more achievable.
3. Make Your Gift List: Create a list of the people you plan to shop for and determine how much you want to spend on each person. Shopping with a plan can help you stay within your budget and reduce the temptation to make impulse purchases. Starting early may also give you more time to compare prices and take advantage of sales.
4. Review Your Current Expenses: Look at your monthly spending and identify areas where you could temporarily cut back. Maybe you can reduce dining out, postpone a nonessential purchase or cancel a subscription you aren't using. Redirecting some of those dollars toward your holiday savings can give you more flexibility when the season arrives.
5. Don't Forget to Plan for January: It's easy to focus so much on December that January gets overlooked. Before making holiday purchases, think about upcoming bills and other financial priorities. Try to avoid relying heavily on credit cards or taking on debt that could make the start of the new year more difficult.
Preparing for the holidays doesn't mean taking the fun out of the season. In fact, having a plan can give you greater peace of mind and allow you to focus on what matters most, such as spending time with the people you care about. We're proud to help our customers make informed financial decisions throughout the year. After all, a little planning today can help make the holiday season brighter and your financial outlook stronger in the new year.
