The City of Reno, in partnership with several local organizations, is working to raise at least $250,000 to rebuild the Sierra Vista Park shelter, a well-used park amenity destroyed by arson in November 2024.
The shelter previously served families, hikers, mountain bikers, and community groups as a central gathering space for outdoor recreation. Once the project is funded, the new structure will feature a steel frame, fire-resistant roofing, and a concrete foundation to improve long-term safety and durability.
A recent $125,000 pledge from the Greg Nelson Trust-Warren Nelson Family has allowed the project to move forward. City officials and project partners are now seeking additional community support to match the contribution and help complete the reconstruction.
"I'd like to extend my gratitude to the Greg Nelson Trust-Warren Nelson Family for their generous donation to help rebuild an important park amenity at Sierra Vista Park," said Ward 5 Councilmember Devon Reese. "This, along with support from other local organizations, is a true testament to what we can accomplish when we come together to make a positive impact in our shared public spaces."
Greg Nelson, also known as "The Man on the Bicycle," was a familiar and beloved presence across northern Nevada's trail system. He had a deep passion for cycling, especially on Peavine Mountain, where he spent countless hours riding, exploring, and connecting with the outdoors.
In addition to the Greg Nelson Trust-Warren Nelson Family, the project is being supported by a coalition of local organizations, including:
- Biggest Little Trail Stewardship
- McQueen High School Knightriders Mountain Bike Team
- Galena High School Mountain Bike Team
- Nevada North Interscholastic Cycling League
- Formgrey Studio
- City of Reno Parks and Recreation Department
"Our parks are built for the community, and we're seeing the community step up in a big way," said Nathan Ullyot, Director of Reno Parks and Recreation. "This shelter has always been a gathering place, and we're committed to bringing it back with the support of our residents and partners."
This fundraising effort will be highlighted during Community Bike Day on Sunday, May 3, when riders of all ages and skill levels are expected to gather at Sierra Vista Park for races, activities, and demonstrations, showcasing the park's role as a regional destination for outdoor recreation. This event will be hosted by members of the mountain biking community.
Additional support opportunities include:
- Corporate Sponsorships: Businesses may sponsor project components and receive on-site recognition.
- Community Fundraisers: Neighborhood groups are encouraged to host local events to raise funds.
- Volunteer Days: Volunteers will be needed during construction for landscaping and finishing touches.
