Fire Defensible Spaces Grant

Josephine County Firewise has funding available for residents in high-risk fire zones to help remove fuel sources and debris that can carry a wildfire towards homes and ignite them. Creating fire defensible spaces around your home by removing fuel sources and flammable debris has been proven to reduce the risk of a home igniting during a wildfire, and it can provide firefighters with the necessary space to defend your home from the flames. While nothing can guarantee a fire won't spread to your home, taking steps to reduce that risk is always a good strategy. The areas eligible for this grant are:

Economic Development Grant

Josephine County is now accepting applications for the Economic Development Grant Program. Businesses and non-profits in Josephine County that have a project that could benefit Josephine County commerce, jobs, infrastructure, or services can apply for grant funding to support their project. Completed grant applications will be reviewed by the Economic Development Grant Advisory Committee.

Board of Commissioners' Weekly Summary

The Josephine County Board of Commissioners met this week for its Administration Workshop on Tuesday, September 8, followed by the Weekly Business Session on Wednesday, September 9. Discussions ranged from the structure and funding of public safety services and County advisory committees to economic development funding, natural-resource issues, and concerns brought forward by members of the community.

Administration Workshop - September 8

The Board continued discussion regarding the possibility of creating a service district to support the District Attorney's Office, Juvenile Justice and the Josephine County Jail. Commissioners discussed whether such a district could provide a more stable funding source for these public-safety functions and considered possible funding mechanisms, including a property-tax levy. The discussion also addressed the importance of clearly defining the services that would be supported, identifying appropriate tax rates, and evaluating the potential financial impact on residents before moving forward.

The Board also reviewed procedures for modifying meeting agendas, including when items may appropriately be added or removed and the importance of maintaining compliance with Oregon public-meeting requirements. The discussion focused on balancing the need to conduct County business efficiently with providing adequate public notice and transparency.

Commissioners reviewed proposed Economic Development Grant Committee bylaws and discussed the committee's structure and responsibilities as the County prepares for the current economic development grant cycle. The Board also addressed personnel requisitions, appointments to the Mining Advisory Committee, and matters associated with the upcoming levy and the County's voter-pamphlet argument.

The workshop included a broader discussion concerning organizational maturity and County operations, with Commissioners considering ways to improve organizational consistency, communication, expectations and accountability across County government.

Weekly Business Session - September 9

During the Weekly Business Session, Commissioners heard from members of the public on a variety of issues affecting Josephine County and the surrounding region. Topics raised included Oregon sanctuary laws, water and mining concerns in the Illinois Valley, federal management of roadless areas, and the proposed Outstanding Resource Waters designation.

The Board also heard a concern involving parking near the YMCA, including questions regarding the boundaries and responsibilities associated with neighboring parking areas. The matter was brought to the Board's attention following an interaction involving a constituent and local law enforcement.

Commissioners additionally discussed opportunities for local economic development and announced that approximately $445,000 is available through Josephine County's Economic Development Grant program. The funding provides an opportunity to support qualifying projects intended to encourage economic activity and benefit communities within Josephine County.
