WASHINGTON - Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (WI-01) and Ranking Member Joe Morelle (NY-25) announced an increase in funding for the personal security pilot program for Members of the House of Representatives. The threat level for Members remains high, and these funds are being made available to supplement the existing security programs and services currently available to lawmakers.
"I'm pleased the Speaker approved doubling the amount our pilot program allows for Members to hire personal security," said Chairman Steil. "These additional funds will go a long way in ensuring lawmakers can continue to do their jobs without fear for their families' safety."
"I'm pleased that Leader Jeffries and I, along with Speaker Johnson and Chairman Steil, could work together to double the amount our security pilot program provides to Members. More needs to be done to secure Members, staff and constituents but this is an important and necessary start," said Ranking Member Joe Morelle.
Background:
In July, House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04), Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), Chairman Steil, and Ranking Member Joe Morelle, launched a pilot program that allows Members to use $5,000 per month for personal security. Today's announcement doubles that monthly allotment to $10,000 and extends the program through November 21, 2025.
In addition, Members are also permitted to spend up to $20,000 for comprehensive security equipment to be installed at their personal residences. Finally, the United States Capital Police are also authorized to enter into memorandums of understanding with state and local law enforcement to reimburse those agencies for protective services for a lawmaker while they are home in their districts. This pilot program builds on the successes of existing programs to upgrade security at Member primary residences, for cyber protections, and while on official travel.
