West Nile Virus Detected in Lower Merion Township

Public Health Advisory - West Nile Virus Detected in Lower Merion Township

The Montgomery County Office of Public Health reports that West Nile Virus has been detected in a sample of mosquitoes collected in Lower Merion Township on August 13, 2026.

We have had a rainy, hot, and humid summer, and those conditions are just what mosquitoes need to thrive. While we cannot change the weather, we can take appropriate precautions to protect ourselves from mosquito bites and reduce exposure to West Nile Virus.

These precautions include:

  • Remove or drain standing water in gutters, drains, tires, and containers; Be vigilant, especially during rainy weather.
  • Make sure screens on doors and windows are in good condition;
  • When possible, avoid outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn. If you must be outdoors when mosquitoes are active, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and use mosquito repellent with an EPA registration number on the label and follow the manufacturer's recommended use.
