84 Years of West Jordan: See How Our City Has Transformed Since 1941

West Jordan turns 84 on January 10, 2025!

We're celebrating 84 official years as West Jordan! Our city has grown well beyond its original 9.6 square miles and 2,000 residents. We're now one of the largest cities in Utah, cover 32 sq. miles, and are 116,000 residents strong!

What else has changed? Back in 1941…

  • The most popular song was Chattanooga Choo-Choo by Glenn Miller Orchestra.
  • Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon and Dumbo premiered.
  • The most popular candy was M&Ms, made **especially for the U.S. Army soldiers fighting in WWII.
  • $100 in 1941 would buy you $2,237.00 worth of goods today.
  • A gallon of gas for your car was $0.19.
  • A dozen eggs was $0.40.
  • The most popular baby names were James and Mary.

**Fun Fact: Forrest Mars (one of the M's in M&M) was inspired by candy coated chocolate he saw soldiers eating during the Spanish Civil War.
