Suspect Facing Attempted Murder Charges Following Stabbing in Lloyd District Neighborhood Restaurant

A suspect is in jail facing attempted murder charges following a stabbing inside a restaurant in the Lloyd District Neighborhood.

On Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 12:27 p.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to North Precinct responded to a report of a stabbing at a restaurant in the 400 block of Northeast Hassalo Street. When they arrived they encountered the suspect at the restaurant doorway holding a knife. The officers challenged him, he complied with commands, and was safely detained. Officers quickly located a victim, an adult female customer of the restaurant, with what appeared to be knife injuries. The injuries were serious but not life threatening. The patient declined medical transport and was treated at the scene. No one else was injured.

A knife was seized as evidence.

The Portland Police Major Crimes Unit were called out and assisted with the investigation, which revealed the customer was injured during the course of a robbery of a restaurant employee at knifepoint. Following the investigation, Elias L. Lavelle, 42, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) on charges of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Robbery in the First Degree.
