The Bookseller Will Take Up Residence In The Historic Woodies Building On F Street
Washington, D.C. - January 14, 2026 -Barnes & Noble is pleased to announce the opening of its newest Washington, D.C. bookstore on Wednesday, January 21st.
The new Barnes & Noble will offer over 15,000 square feet of books, toys, games, magazines, gift items and more. The new multilevel Barnes & Noble is located at 1025 F Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20004, in the historic Woodward & Lothrop building. This new downtown Barnes & Noble is less than a mile from The White House, National Mall, several Smithsonian Museums, and is just a stone's throw away from the Petersen House where President Lincoln spent his last days.
The bookseller's return to downtown D.C. comes just over a year after returning to their original Georgetown location, occupying the same space they previously had until 2011. The new F Street Barnes & Noble is just around the corner from the bookseller's former downtown location, which closed in 2015.
The new F Street bookstore is the first new Barnes & Noble to open in 2026, with more than 60 planned to follow in the coming year. Barnes & Noble opened over 60 new locations in 2025, and now boasts over 700 bookstores, having been below 600 stores as recently as 2023.
Barnes & Noble Premium and Rewards Members will earn double stamps on all purchases made between Wednesday, 1/21, and Sunday, 1/25. Customers who are not yet Members are encouraged to sign up and start earning stamps and rewards right away.
Everyone who visits the new F Street Barnes & Noble during the grand opening will have access to exclusive deals, like $50 off any NOOK device, and 40% off all DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k Ultra HD movies.
"We are very pleased to open this beautiful new Barnes & Noble in downtown D.C., our first new opening of the year," said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble. "Restoring our presence in the cities abandoned by Barnes & Noble and Borders gathers pace, with new bookstores slated also to open shortly in downtown Seattle and in Chicago's West Loop. It is a very positive time for bookstores."
Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful. The bookseller is experiencing strong sales in its existing stores and has been opening many new stores after more than 15 years of declining store numbers. Since its momentous turnaround in 2020, the bookseller has opened over 170 new bookstores across the country.
Having fallen below 600 locations as recently as 2023, it now has over 700 bookstores. In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019. The bookseller opened over 60 new bookstores in 2025, with at least 60 more planned to open in 2026.
"I am so honored to be a part of our return to downtown D.C.," said Store Manager Elizabeth Jones, Barnes & Noble bookseller since 2011. "Barnes & Noble is a place of solace and discovery, education and magic. We aim to provide a welcoming space for culture, learning, and connection for residents and visitors. D.C. is smart, tenacious, and well-read; we couldn't be more proud to serve this city."
