DNC Hosts Tax Day Press Call on Trump and MAGA GOP’s Tax Scam Arrow

Today, the DNC hosted a press call on Tax Day with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta, former Chief Economist of the United States Department of Labor Heidi Shierholz, and impacted American Kirsten Grady to call out Donald Trump and Republicans' tax scam. Trump promised to lower costs on "Day One," but his out-of-touch agenda is setting Americans' dollars on fire, skyrocketing costs, and putting the economy on the verge of a "Trump recession."

As grocery and electricity costs reach record highs and consumer sentiment hits historic lows, Trump and MAGA Republicans only care about giving tax giveaways to billionaires and sticking working families with the bill. Democrats are fighting back against the GOP's disastrous proposals to make Trump's tax giveaways permanent and gut critical programs like SNAP and Medicaid.

Find highlights from the press call below:

"Just last week, Democrats introduced the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act to stop the Republicans' devastating cuts from becoming law. Democrats across the country are mobilizing against the GOP's cruel agenda," said Rep. Ayanna Pressley. "We won't sit idly by while Trump rips away Americans' health care and forces families to go hungry. And I know my colleagues won't either. We'll continue to fight for a government rooted in real efficiency, one that works for everyone, not just for billionaires."

"Donald Trump's tax plan is great for Donald Trump. It's a death sentence, frankly, for many small business owners who are just trying to take the dream that they had and operate a business, hire their neighbors. It is a kick in the shins for so many parents across this country who are hanging on by their fingernails, who are trying to do everything they can to position themselves and their families and their kids to have it a little bit better than they do," said DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta. "But you know what, it's great for Donald Trump, it's great for Donald Trump's boss, Elon Musk, it's great for the people who can afford memberships to Mar-a-Lago, it's great for them. But it's not great for us, the American people."

"We need a tax system that demands a far more equitable contribution from the rich and invests those revenues in the foundations of shared prosperity, public education, infrastructure, health care, clean energy, social insurance," said former Chief Economist of the United States Department of Labor Heidi Shierholz. "They are essential if we want an economy that actually works for working people of this country, but this administration and its cronies in Congress to their great shame are doing the opposite."

"Donald Trump and his Republican allies are putting programs like Medicaid and SNAP on the chopping block because they want to fund another round of tax handouts for billionaires. I have been one of the 79 million Americans on Medicaid and one of the millions of others who rely on SNAP just to survive," said impacted American Kirsten Grady. "Trump spent his campaign promising to 'stand up' for working families, including families like mine. How is gutting SNAP and Medicaid standing up for working families? How is raising costs to give billionaires another handout standing up for working families? In short, it's not."
