Green Worcester ElectriCITY Municipal Aggregation Program: New Contract Brings Lower Prices, More Green Energy & Stability

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Green Worcester ElectriCITY Aggregation program will deliver lower prices for residents and businesses starting in December when a new 24-month electricity supply contract with Direct Energy Services, LLC ("Direct Energy") takes effect. The program offers:

  • Stable pricing through fixed-rate contracts that extend beyond National Grid's six-month Basic Service rate changes.
  • Consumer protection with a transparent, municipally managed program that has no hidden fees and allows participants to leave anytime without penalty.
  • Reduced carbon emissions by purchasing more renewable energy than required by state law.

The new electricity supply rate options are:

  • Standard Green - 15.32 ¢/kWh: Includes 40% additional renewable energy from local projects for a total of 67% green energy. Most participants are currently enrolled in this option.
  • 100% Green - 16.51 ¢/kWh: Provides 100% renewable electricity from local projects.
  • Basic Green - 14.69 ¢/kWh (new option, available by request) : Includes 20% additional renewable energy for a total of 47% green energy.

The new contract provides long-term stability-a core goal of the program-with fixed prices for 24 months, from December 2025 to December 2027 meter reads. All prices include a $0.001/kWh operational fee that supports program management and local energy initiatives.

Both Worcester Standard Green and Worcester Basic Green prices are lower than National Grid's current residential Basic Service rate of 15.484 ¢/kWh, in effect through January 31, 2026. Savings beyond that date cannot be guaranteed because National Grid's future prices are unknown. However, the program has a strong track record, saving participants more than $11 million since its launch in 2020.

No action is required for current Green Worcester ElectriCITY participants. All active participants will remain enrolled, with the new prices taking effect on December 2025 meter reads. Updated prices will first appear on January 2026 National Grid bills, with the supplier listed as "Green Worc Electricity Aggregation Prog."

Participants will automatically remain in their current option under the new Direct Energy contract. They may, however, switch to another option or leave the program at any time-before the new contract begins or in the future-without fees or penalties. Customers receiving low-income discounts will continue to do so with no changes.

Reducing carbon emissions is central to Green Worcester ElectriCITY and directly supports the Green Worcester Plan. By purchasing more renewable energy than required by state law, participants in Worcester Standard Green and Worcester 100% Green have helped the community avoid over 262 million pounds of CO₂ emissions-the equivalent of taking 27,720 gasoline-powered cars off the road for a year.

Tax-exempt account holders who previously submitted exemption documentation to Direct Energy do not need to resubmit paperwork for the new contract.

About Green Worcester ElectriCITY

Green Worcester ElectriCITY is a municipal electricity aggregation program that gives Worcester residents and businesses more choices for their electricity supply. Enabled by Massachusetts law, municipal aggregation allows cities and towns to select an electricity supplier on behalf of customers-an option more than 200 municipalities statewide have adopted. The program provides long-term pricing stability, consumer protections (including the ability to opt out at any time without penalty), and supports Worcester's climate goals by purchasing additional renewable energy.

Participation affects only the Supply Services portion of the National Grid bill. Delivery charges remain unchanged. Additional terms and conditions apply for large commercial and industrial customers.

To enroll, make changes to enrollment, or get more information, participants are encouraged to visit the program website at GreenWorcesterElectriCITY.com or contact customer support with Worcester's program consultants at 833-926-1207.
