Urban Forestry's annual spring planting season begins on Monday, April 13, 2026.
Crews will be planting approximately 1,400 trees along City of Madison streets.
There will be 35 different tree species planted. When selecting trees, Urban Forestry follows the "10-20-30 Rule" to increase our canopy's overall resilience. The "10-20-30 Rule" means we limit the trees we plant to 10% of any one species, 20% of a genus, and 30% of a particular family.
Upon the conclusion of the spring planting season, Urban Forestry crews will return to pruning and other tree care operations.
In the fall, there will be a second round of planting.
Planting Work Location Information
Planting will occur throughout the city, though this season the work will happen to focus primarily within newer housing developments on the far east and far west sides of Madison. We also have several sites to replant on the isthmus within tree grates.
What Tree Planting Looks Like
Planting work involves multiple Urban Forestry crews in an assembly-line method of planting to be as efficient as possible.
Spring planting operations are expected to continue through the end of the month.
New Tree Resources
If you received a tree in the right of way space in front of your home, we have resources on our website to help you care for it, and answer any questions you may have.
Tree Inventory
If you are curious about what kind of tree you have in front of your home, the Urban Forestry website has an inventory showing information about most of the public trees in the City of Madison.
Species information about the newly planted trees will be added to the inventory as soon as we can.
