Memorial created to honor victims of crime and provide a place of reflection, remembrance, and healing for families and the community
(VILLAGE OF ENDICOTT, NY) - Broome County, alongside the Crime Victims Assistance center, Eagle Scout Schyler Savage, local officials, community partners, and families, gathered at Roundtop Park today for the official ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating the completion of the Crime Victims Memorial.
The memorial project originated from Savage's Eagle Scout service project proposal, which he brought to Broome County following personal tragedy and a desire to create a lasting space for remembrance and healing within the community.
As part of his Eagle Scout project, Savage conducted fundraising efforts and raised more than $25,000 to support completion of the memorial, including landscaping and additional project enhancements.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, the Crime Victims Assistance Center recognized Savage with its annual Lighthouse Award, presented to individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference on behalf of victims. He was also recognized with the award of Eagle Scout Project of the Year, presented by The National Eagle Scout Association.
Located at Roundtop Park, the memorial features a retaining wall and patio centered around a heart-shaped raised garden. Granite tiles engraved with the names of local victims of crime serve as a lasting tribute to those who have lost their lives and provide families with a place for reflection and remembrance.
The memorial's construction was completed in-house by the Broome County Department of Public Works.
Families or loved ones with questions regarding the memorial are encouraged to contact the Crime Victims Assistance Center at (607) 723-3200 for additional information and assistance.
