What Was Okta Telling You Before Its Stock Doubled

Shares of Okta (OKTA) returned 112% from October 15, 2025, to October 16, 2026. This performance easily cleared the 16.2% return for the S&P 500, following an 11.6% drop for the stock over the previous six months. During that same year, the identity security company widened its narrow profits, and its newer products, led by Okta Identity Governance, became a large part of what it sells. Was any of that visible before October 2025, while the shares were still falling?

Management Was Naming Okta's New Products By December 2024

The clues were already public, and the company stated them plainly. On a December 3, 2024 call for fiscal Q3 2025, management noted Okta was selling new products such as Okta Privileged Access and Device Access. The tone shifted further on the March 3, 2025 call, when executives called Okta Identity Governance "a huge success." These remarks arrived more than seven months before October 2025. Investors did not need to guess which products mattered, because the company named them directly.

Okta's Filed Quarters Showed A Loss Turning Into Profit

Regulatory filings also showed improving profit well before October 2025. In the quarter ended October 2024, Okta posted an operating loss equal to 2.4% of revenue. By the quarter ended July 2025, filed on August 27, 2025, its operating margin reached 5.6%. On the earlier March 2025 call, management had already highlighted record profitability and free cash flow.

Sales growth painted a different picture. Revenue grew 13.9% from a year earlier in the quarter ended October 2024, but that pace slowed to 12.7% in the quarter ended July 2025. The early indicator lived in the margin, not the growth. A Seeking Alpha article published on May 7, 2025, made this exact margin case, highlighting traction for Identity Governance. Okta's own filings already showed it: the quarter ended January 2025, filed on March 5, 2025, carried an operating margin of 2.8%.

Operating Income At Okta Nearly Tripled In A Year

Profit margins continued to widen throughout the year. Okta recorded $236 million in operating income over the four quarters ended July 2026, up from $83 million a year earlier. That profit equaled 7.7% of revenue, an increase from 3.0% a year earlier. For context, the operating margin for the S&P 500 as a whole was 18.5%.

Acting on the early signs still meant waiting. The stock closed at $62.93 on April 10, 2026. This price left the shares about 29% below their October 15, 2025 close, before they eventually rallied.

Okta's AI news before October 2025 presents a different case. The company launched AI agent security tools in June and September 2025. Yet on the August 26, 2026 call, management said Okta for AI Agents was still too small to show up in the financial numbers. Ultimately, the new products and the profit were the signs that held up.

Is Okta Still Showing The Same Signs Today?

The company is still widening its profit and selling its newer products today. Okta's operating margin reached 13.3% in fiscal Q2 2027, the quarter ended July 2026. This rate was more than twice its level a year earlier. During the August 26, 2026 call, management reported that new products made up about 30% of bookings. Okta Identity Governance was once again the leading contributor.

Sales growth remains the weaker element. Revenue grew 10.6% in fiscal Q2 2027, and management expects growth of 10% for fiscal Q3 2027. When Okta releases its next earnings report, expected on or around November 30, 2026, the number to watch is sales growth for fiscal Q3 2027.

Your Advisor Retired? Get A Second Opinion Before You Settle

Most investors only saw Okta's run after it had happened. When the advisor who built your plan moves on, it is a natural moment to ask whether the plan still fits the life you have now.
