Supervisors to Consider How to Fill the Sheriff Vacancy

Redwood City - The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, at 6 p.m. to gather public input on the process and procedures to use in filling the sheriff vacancy, including desired qualifications should the Board of Supervisors elect to make an appointment.

The special meeting will allow residents to share their views on the qualities they want in the next sheriff and to inform the Board's decision on whether to appoint a sheriff or call a special election.

The County Chartersets a November 13 deadline to appoint a new sheriff or call for a special election. If the Board opts for an election, it could be scheduled between 102 to 131 days from the decision to call the election. But, the Board may also choose to align the election with the already-scheduled June 2, 2026, primary election.

"This meeting is a vital opportunity for community members to participate in shaping the future of public safety in San Mateo County," said Board President David Canepa. "We want to ensure that the new Sheriff possesses the qualities and experiences that are most important to our residents."

Residents, stakeholders and community organizations are encouraged to share their perspectives. Public testimony will be an important component, allowing diverse voices to contribute to the vision for effective and accountable leadership in the Sheriff's Office.
