Future women leaders conclude week of civic leadership at UW-Oshkosh

After a week of campaigning, debating and leading, 484 young women from across Wisconsin concluded the 81st session of American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, leaving campus with firsthand experience in leadership, public service and civic engagement.

Throughout the week, delegates transformed the UWO campus into a model state government-forming political parties, campaigning for office, debating public policy, drafting legislation and participating in elections that brought democracy to life.

Badger Girls State delegates take part in an Inauguration ceremony at Kolf Sport Center on the UW-Oshkosh campus.

The program culminated Thursday evening with the Inaugural Ceremony, where newly elected state officers, senators and assembly members took the oath of office. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers joined Supreme Court Justice Jill Karofsky, State Superintendent Jill Underly, Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski and State Treasurer John Leiber in recognizing the delegates' accomplishments and celebrating the next generation of women leaders.

Delegate Holly Justine of Kohler High School, said she had a good week and will miss the friends she made. Justine said she's considering a career involving public policy and may attend UW-Madison or UW-Oshkosh.

"I definitely learned things about bills and policy and amendments," said Katherine Murphy of Lancaster High School in southwest Wisconsin, who said she'll be sad when Badger Girls State ends.

Delegate Gianna Balke of Burlington, said she is inspired to seek a career as a politician or attorney.

"Everyone (here) was so kind and I made so many friends," she said, "and I learned a lot about government."

Hosted at UW-Oshkosh since 2004, American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State reflects a longstanding partnership dedicated to developing informed citizens through experiential learning. The program also has a special connection to the university through Dany Thompson, chairman of Badger Girls State and a UW-Oshkosh alumna, who returned to campus to lead this year's session.

As delegates depart campus, they take with them more than memories. They leave with stronger leadership skills, new friendships and a deeper appreciation for civic engagement-experiences that will continue to shape their schools, communities and future careers.
