Key West Mayor Danise "DeeDee" Henriquez welcomed Florida State Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez who came to City Hall today to present the City with a check for $1 million.
Senator Rodriguez sponsored the bill that brings $500,000 to rehabilitate and renovate aged-out manholes throughout the island.
State Representative Jim Mooney sponsored a house bill that earmarks another $500,000 to revitalize the Crosstown Greenway and Von Phister corridor. Representative Mooney was not able to attend, and so Senator Rodriguez presented the check for both legislators.
"It is an honor and a privilege to represent you in Tallahassee," said Senator Rodriguez. "I am humbled by the support in all of Monroe County and especially Key West for entrusting us to help secure these funds, which are going to be used for public safety. This is an issue in every community, and we want to make sure our residents and visitors remain safe."
"Thank you for our partnership," said Mayor Henriquez, "and for working with us in Tallahassee. We thank you for all that you do."
Both bills were approved in the last legislative session.
The lining and rehabilitation of 58 manholes will reduce the flow of groundwater into the wastewater collection system. By reducing the amount of water treated, the wastewater plant will operate more efficiently, lowering operational costs and increasing the system's capacity.
The improvements to the Crosstown Greenway and the Von Phister corridor include better stormwater drainage, repairs to the road's subsurface, milling and paving, as well as striping. The Greenway provides a safe and efficient route for bicycles and e-bikes, diverting them from the busy thoroughfares of North Roosevelt and Flagler Ave.
