ATLANTA - State Representative Terry Cummings (D-Mableton) today issues the following statement on the passing of U.S. Congressman David Scott (D-GA):
"Yesterday, Georgia-and our nation-lost a giant.
"Congressman David Scott devoted more than half a century of his life to public service, guided by an unwavering belief that government should work for the people. From the Georgia Legislature to the halls of Congress, he never lost sight of who he was fighting for: working families, farmers, veterans and communities too often left unheard.
"He was a trailblazer-becoming the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee-and used that position not for recognition, but for results. He worked to reduce hunger, strengthen rural communities and expand opportunity across this country.
"But, beyond the titles and accomplishments, Congressman Scott will be remembered for his humanity. He believed in lifting people up. He believed in meeting folks where they were. And, he believed deeply in the promise of Georgia.
"That is a life of purpose. That is a legacy of service. And, that is a standard for all of us who follow.
"Today, we honor Congressman David Scott not only for what he achieved but also for how he served-with resilience, dignity and a steadfast commitment to the people of Georgia.
"May we carry that legacy forward.
"Rest in power, Congressman Scott."
Representative Terry Cummings represents the citizens of District 39, which includes a portion of Cobb County. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and currently serves on the Banks & Banking, Public Safety and Homeland Security and State Properties committees.
