Prime Minister Michal: the enlargement of the European Union is a geopolitical necessity for us

Stenbock House, 3 June 2026 - Prime Minister Kristen Michal will travel to Tivat, Montenegro, on Thursday for the EU-Western Balkans summit. The meeting will focus on the enlargement of the European Union and regional security.

"The enlargement of the European Union is very important for Estonia. We know from our experience just how profound and positive the impact of joining the European Union can be on a new Member State," said prime minister Michal.

"Enlargement is also a geopolitical necessity for us. The more countries that share European values and principles, the safer, stronger, and more prosperous our entire continent will be," he added.

The summit will be attended by the heads of the 19 Member States of the European Union, as well as leaders of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Northern Macedonia.

The previous EU-Western Balkans summit took place on 17 December 2025 in Brussels. The prime minister will return to Estonia on the evening of 6 June.
