Remember e-bike safety checks to keep the community safe and prevent citations

With school out for summer and more young people riding e-bikes, the City and Mission Viejo Police Services are reminding parents to review safety checks with their children to keep riders safe and prevent citations.

Since standard patrol vehicles face physical limitations when attempting to stop non-compliant e-bike riders, Mission Viejo Police Services conducted a special enforcement operation last weekend using drones targeting e-bike safety. E-bike riders frequently maneuver into dense public spaces, pedestrian walkways, and restricted areas where a police vehicle cannot access. During this operation, deputies issued multiple citations and impounded an e-motorcycle.

To prevent this from happening and to keep your riders safe, take a moment to review these safety checks with your children:

  • Check the equipment: Ensure the bike or e-bike is appropriate and legally compliant for your child's age groups.
  • Check the Helmet: confirm your child has a properly fitted helmet and wears it every ride.
  • Check the rules: teach and reinforce the rules of the road including stopping at signs and riding with traffic.
