New Climate Agreement Between Norway and Jordan

'The world needs countries to cooperate in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This agreement can help Jordan lower emissions from the waste sector, trigger green investments from the private sector, and contribute towards Norway achieving its 2030 climate target', said the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.

Waste accounts for significant emissions globally, and it is an area where many developing countries need support.

'This agreement represents the operational framework for activating bilateral cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, enhancing Jordan's capacity to achieve measurable, reportable, and verifiable emission reductions in line with the highest standards of environmental integrity. All transfers of emission reduction units will be conducted transparently, consistent with Jordan's Nationally Determined Contributions, ensuring the avoidance of double counting and delivering tangible climate impact that supports low-emission development and stimulates high-quality green investments', said the Jordanian Minister for Environment H.E. Dr. Aiman A. Soleiman.

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement allows countries to cooperate on reducing their emissions, also known as trading of carbon credit.

Norway is contributing towards establishing a global carbon market through our engagement under Article 6. This work is organized through the Global Emission Reduction Initiative (NOGER Initiative) under the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment.
