Radu Miruță's participation in the Foreign Affairs Council Meeting (Defence), in Brussels

On Wednesday, February 11th, Minister of National Defence, Radu Miruță, participated in the EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting (Defence), in Brussels.

The meeting agenda reflected the need to continue and consolidate the support provided to Ukraine, as well as current concerns regarding the developments in the European security environment. The discussions were attended by Ukraine's Minister of Defence, Mr. Mykhailo Fedorov during the first part of the meeting.

In the context of the persistence of risks generated by the war triggered by the Russian Federation, the Member States expressed the need to adapt the support provided to Ukraine. In this regard, the Ministers of Defence analysed the options through which the European Union can maintain a sustainable pace, both in the short and medium term, emphasizing coordination, predictability and efficient use of available resources. The integration of the operational experience acquired by the Ukrainian forces into the European processes of capability development, with the aim of accelerating the adaptation to new types of threats, was also approached.

The Romanian official has pointed out the relevance of infrastructure development and projects that facilitate practical cooperation between allies, emphasizing that the Eastern Flank requires increased attention from a deterrence and defence perspective. In his speech, Minister of National Defence highlighted the importance of an overall approach at European level in managing security challenges as well as the fact that support for Ukraine remains essential for regional stability.

"Romania supports measures aimed at increasing the European Union's capacity to act coherently and efficiently, including by enhancing industrial cooperation among member states and capitalizing on existing financial mechanisms," the Romanian Minister of Defence said.

In addition, representatives of European institutions made proposals regarding the broader involvement of the European Investment Bank in supporting projects relevant to the defence field, as well as topics of interest regarding the implementation of the new initiative in support of Ukraine - Ukraine Support Loan.
