Ready to supercharge your career in 2025

You know how it goes: come the new year, you pledge to get in shape, eat more healthy food, read more books, curb spending and embrace more meaningful experiences. Streaks such as 'dry January' and 'Veganuary' are taking social media by storm, highlighting our inherent need to change our habits, become more disciplined and get closer to our ideal selves. Regardless of the varying success rates of those plans, they are still important in the sense that they motivate us to expand and grow.

In 2025, why not shift the focus to your professional life, setting some resolutions that will help you reach new heights in your career? Here are some ideas.

Decide on a short- and long-term career plan

Drifting aimlessly in your professional life means you might end up somewhere you don't like. Ask yourself what you want to achieve career-wise in the next year, as well as where you see yourself in five years' time. Having a shorter and a longer term plan will help you identify the in-between steps that will lead you to your goals.

Learn a new skill - or two

The labour market is constantly evolving, and if you want to stay relevant and on the top tier of the employability scale, you must keep on learning. Getting up to date with AI, taking an online course, acquiring a new professional certification, learning a new language, or investing in your soft skills are some of the ways you can stay ahead of the game.

Cultivate your professional network

The jury is in; maintaining a rich network is one of the greatest professional boosts you can give yourself. From having someone to 'talk shop' with to increasing your chances of landing your next job (did you know that at least 80 % of all jobs are filled via a professional network connection?), it is good to maintain relationships with other people in your professional field.

Update your CV regularly

Waiting until it's time to apply for a new job to update your Europass CV means you will be cramming at the last minute should an interesting opportunity arise. Why not resolve to update it regularly, every six months or so, adding new duties you have taken on, new skills acquired, or a new role assumed? When it's time to hit the 'apply now' button, you will be thankful you have already done most of the work.

Polish your digital presence

Alongside updating your LinkedIn profile, why not tend to your overall digital footprint? Go through any other public social media accounts you might have and ask yourself: 'If a prospective employer were to see this post/photo/event, how would I feel?' If the answer isn't 'pretty good', you know it's time to delete.

Reassess your work-life balance

If the past year has been all work and no play for you, then it is time to reevaluate your relationship with your job. Stress and burnout can really take a toll on your physical and mental health; don't let yourself go there. This year, resolve to respect your off time as much as you value your job. Your health, productivity and motivation will thank you.

Get your dream job

Finally, are you satisfied with your current work situation? If not, what are you doing about it? Make 2025 the year you go after your professional dreams with determination, perseverance, and a can-do attitude.
